Is it possible to put a gradient on text?

You could try putting your text on its own layer, then using the magic wand to select the text and finally using the Gradient plugin (or the built-in gradient tool) to color the text.

It would probably work best if your text is not "anti-aliased".

Then, if necessary, you could use the feather plugin to finish off your text.

Not directly, but you can by using multiple layers...

Create a layer with your gradient.

Create a layer with your text.

On "Text" layer, Shift+Magic Wand select the background (adjust tolerance to desired level)

Switch to "Gradient" layer (while still selected) and press delete.

Delete "Text" layer.

Blur/Sharpen "Gradient" layer until text looks correct.

Download Illnab's Alpha Mask Import plugin.

Open a new image the same size as your current image.

Give the new image a black background.

Create your text in white where you want the text to be in your original image.

Save the image as textmask.png.

In your original image, create a new layer and draw your gradient with the fade in proper relation to where you want the text and what part of the gradient you want visible. You could unflatten the mask image and copy / paste the text layer to the document as a reference. Use the Mask Import plugin to import the textmask.png to mask out the gradient in the shape of the text.

The up-side to this one is that it will be anti aliased, same as the text was originally.

OK, here's a fourth method...

Select a layer and create your gradient on it

Create a new layer and fill that layer with black

Put your text on that layer in white

Change the layer blending mode to Multiply.

Merge Down.

What do you mean by "unflatten" the mask image though?

With the timeline I gave, the image would have been saved as a .png before copying the text over to the first document. When an image is saved as a .png, or any file type other than .pdn / .psd, the image is automatically flattened before it's saved. So, if you just need to copy the text, you'd have to [Ctrl]+[Z] to undo the flatten and select the text layer.
