Cyberchief
I use Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit, 8 GB Ram, Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB DDR3 Video Ram, Intel Dual Core Processor 3.20 GHz, SATA II 320 GB Hard Drive. I guess I must be holding my mouth wrong or something. This started with Version 3.36, it just stopped working. I uninstalled this version, did a Registry clean and then rebooted. I downloaded the newer version 3.5 Beta 1. Did a clean install and received Error 1603. I uninstalled, did registry clean, reboot and tried installation again, received the same Error 1603. Today I downloaded the newest version 3.5 Beta 2. Installed and low and behold Error 1603 again. Is anyone else having this problem? Have received responses to problem but, no solutions. This has been going on for about a month now. Yes, I have read and complied with the post about Install and uninstall. By the way that post is over 2 years old, check the dates. I'm sure with many releases between then and now I think something would have changed? My .NET Framework is up to date with all service packs. If no resolution is furnished I will have no choice but to move on and find another program that fits the bill for me. Please only serious replies are needed, I would like to continue using this program.
Cyberchief
I was going through and cleaning up the files left over from the uninstall. I found two (2) files. This is the content of the file named PdnMsiInstall.log: === Logging started: 10/2/2009 12:16:22 === Error 1714. The older version of Paint.NET v3.5 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. System Error 1610. === Logging stopped: 10/2/2009 12:17:08 ===. I don't know if this will help but I really hope so? There is another file named: PdnSetupNgenInstall.log. There is quite a bit of info in the second file. Not exactly sure how to post it here? Hopefully this will help in a solution. Cyberchief
Yes, I have run the Clean Install Utility and Paint.NET wasn't listed. I have also run Comodo System Cleaner, CCleaner, TweakNow Powerpack 2009. I'm really at whits end. I mentioned some files I found in the earlier post would the other file info help? It's quite a bit of info and I'm sure it has meaning to or for someone. Really would like to continue using this program. The file I mentioned is named PdnSetupNgenInstall.log. Richard Robertson
I am having this same problem and it's really frustrating. 1603 and those logs mentioned those errors. Also, why does Paint.Net use two install processes? I see a Nullsoft installer that appears to install some files to the temp folder and then it runs an installer from the temp folder. Why can't it just use a Nullsoft installer to do the entire process? Windows Installer has caused me nothing but headaches lately.
Rick Brewster
Paint.NET does not use two install processes. NSIS is only used as a self-extracting container for the Paint.NET installer. NSIS is actually a very painful way to write an installer. It also would not work out for Paint.NET's installation requirements. Richard Robertson
Why not just use the self extracting properties of Windows Installer then? This doesn't really address the 1603 error ("generic error" in installation) which seems related to ngen according to the logs. I've also found multiple ngen processes running after the installer. (I know that it just compiles assemblies to native code; I'm a .Net programmer.) I managed to get one of the betas to install but I don't remember what I did to get it working. I tried upgrading it, didn't work. Tried to uninstall it, couldn't and had to use the Microsoft tool. I can't get it to install at all now.
