Roger Norton
'Open' and 'Open with' feature in Windows 10 has stopped opening Paint.NET image files. Feature works if other paint programmes are selected. Paint.NET is the default app. The only way the files will open is by selecting them from 'files' in the Paint.NET app. It appears that the app. is being blocked from opening images. Rick Brewster
This will hopefully be fixed in the upcoming 5.0.4 update. Roger Norton
Thank you. Interestingly the suggestion on the forum of including the Paint.NET shortcut, to the 'Send to' folder, did not work for me. Although the shortcut link was selected, the programme still would not open.
Solution Roger Norton Posted April 11, 2023 Author Solution Share Posted April 11, 2023 As of April 11th. 2023, the condition has cleared, possible Microsoft update? Thanks for support with this problem.
Roger Norton
The condition has returned today with files not opening, only through using 'files' in Paint.net programme.

Disk4mat
I noticed something odd, but I am not using a stable PDN release so I never mentioned it. If I right click a JPG and select Open With, then select PDN, Windows presents me with an Open with dialog and MS Photos is at the top of the list. A couple of lines down is PDN and I can choose open once or always. I updated a few MS apps via the store (MS Paint was one of them) earlier this month and thats when I think it changed. Im working right now but I can post a screenshot and steps later if thats useful.
Rick Brewster
@Disk4mat, Windows has a habit of re-asking you "Which app do you want to use for this type of file?" any time a new app is installed that registers for that file type. This also tends to include Paint.NET when it updates. 1 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
Disk4mat
I am certain you are 100% correct. When it comes to MS updates some of the most unexpected things happen.
Roger Norton
Paint.Net will not open at all now. I have re-installed from official website but has made no difference. I have tried to re-install the MS Store Paint.Net app. without success. MS says there is a problem with the download. The app. says that my computer is compatible with the programme. I have posted a MS fault report and there appears to be others, reporting the loss of Paint.Net. Has been missing for five days now, since MS update.
