Installer error on Windows 11 22H2 - Smart app control

In the new version of Windows 11 22H2 with Smart app control enabled, it is not possible to install Paint.NET.
I tried with the .exe and .msi.
With .exe returns 1603
With the .msi "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.
A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Cortact your support personnel or package vendor."

Thanks

See, now this is why I won't use computers until they work all the bugs out of them.

Did you try turning off the Smart App control before installing Paint.NET and then turning it back on after?

Also, sounds like you might have an existing paint.net installation that has become broken. Try this utility to remove the broken installation:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

Afterwards, you should be able to install paint.net anew.

It's a test computer.
If you turn off Smart App control, it is not possible to turn it back on, just by reinstalling Windows again.
A fresh install of Windows was done, it didn't have any version of Paint.NET on it before.

Looking at the eventviewer, have these 2 messages at the time I tried to install.

Application: paintdotnet.exe

  • 1 year later...

Are there any updates on this topic. we are over a year later and still smart app control of microsoft is blocking  paint 5
turning off smart app control means you have to do a reinstall of windows  and like  chainsaw said about his pc  .....
i also did recently  a reinstallation of win11. when you read why smart app control is blocking this ....its the signature
that is not there. Signature means for microsoft .... reliable/trusted  software .

thanks

PDN is signed using Microsoft’s own Azure Code Signing service. If their Smart App Control still blocks PDN then this is a Microsoft bug and you need to talk to them.
