Default document type when saving

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am a proud user of Paint.net and would like to thank you on this great tool. For it to be a drop better, I would propose that you add a possibility to set up a default document type in Settings, when saving the picture for the first time. Currently this is preset on .png type. It would take many clicks away (or secondary type conversion), if I users could preset for instance to .jpg.

Take care and all good to you all!

According to Rick Brewster, the author of Paint.NET:

Can I change the default save format to JPG?

No, jpeg is a "lossy" format. That is, every time you open a jpeg and save it, you're losing quality. This is like making a photocopy of a photocopy, etc. PNG and PDN, on the other hand, are exact formats. You can open and save them as often as you like without losing a single pixel of quality. So, paint.net defaults to PNG format for single layer images and PDN for multiple layer projects. If you want to save as jpeg, you need to choose it by hand. This ensures that you won't lose quality in your image unless you specifically choose to do so.

That said, eventually there may be a feature added to Paint.NET (which is currently WAY down the priority list) for a File > Save for Web (or File > Export) that will default to .jpg, strip out metadata, and not clear the document dirty flag.

But, this is so far down the priority list of issues/features that I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it.
