Lasso Select function not working 4.0.9

I just upgraded to 4.0.9 and the Lasso Select function seems to have changed. I want to lasso select part of the image, then cut it out, turn the rest of the image black and white, then paste the coloured original selection back in. I used to be able to do this easily in the previous version. Now after I have created the lasso selection, I press CTRL+X and nothing happens.

 

Has this function changed?

To add more info, in the History box, 'cut' appears however the selection is most definitely NOT cut out.

Have you tried:

 

1.  Lasso select.

2.  Ctrl I (invert)

3.  New Layer and whilst still selected add new background.

 

P.S.  Also, at step 2 you could use - Edit - Copy and it would save the image you had just selected, so that you could 'paste' it onto a new layer.
