  1. Shades of Grey is absolutely amazing, and really cool. I request a tut in the typography section. All your stuff is really good. :D

EDIT: Oh, i see that its a tut, well i guess i'll check it out. Ama :D zing stuff anyway.

I must be missing something, which tut is it?

  2. Ah ! I do see where you are going with this one. I didn't expect this. Well, this turned a bad day right around, right before I go to bed. I'm glad I waited around to see it. :D

  3. I'm sure your gallery is multiplying by itself ... there's loads of great new stuff I seem to have missed :? (And you called myself and Yellowman prolific :P )

I've got to admit I had to google abalone (I thought it was a Roxy Music song ... then realised that was Avalon  ) The 2nd one with soft relief is my fave out of the 3 ... but they all look good. Nice work mate

Thanks ! I had a nice vacation working around the place but didn't get a lot of paint time in so I made up for it when I went back to work. Not that I would do anything like this at work  (whispers, in case my boss reads this) I can cram a lot of planning into lunch hour with rough sketches and then do the real thing when I get home. That's my new plan and it seems to be working well :D Roxy Music ! That's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. What a great band that was at the time!

just dropped by to check your abalone texture. I'd have to go with Ben the second one is best of the three for textureization. I have a feeling you are going for a sheet of green abalone, most people will not really recognize there are so many colors in real life. That's why I'd say go for more whites/offwhites in greenish tints. You have the swirls down now you need the irridesants. and shimmers.

    ciao OMA

PS I'd go form more of this sort of look http://www.flickr.com/photos/omnia/180477917/ especially the large piece in the background.

Yes, that is exactly what I was going for, but then I must cut it up for the little that I need. I felt I needed more color for the project I'm working on because the abalone will be small. I'll leave it at that....I don't want to ruin the expectations if I really mess it up. I do believe you are right though, needs more iridescent and shimmer. I'm thinking the same effect with more light colors mixed in with the dark, as you say "whites/offwhites in greenish tints". Hmmm......will have to think about it a lot more. I'm sure the abalone doesn't have to think too hard, he just does it. :D Nature is so beautiful in the details, if we can only capture a speck of that beauty....

  4. @thanks Welsh blue. now you know what is strange. I actually collect antique murano glass, mostly the gold flecked ones.

It's even stranger I meant Murano glass not Milano :D

I used to collect glass from boot sales etc, but my wife banned it until I learnt to use a duster and polish

    What is a boot sale?

Oma, have you ever heard of Fenton glass? I think that is what it was called.

  5. @Possum Roadkill--Ah that was a really old piece. One of my firsts in fact :) To tell you the truth, I honestly can't remember  The only thing I remember was creating a metallic texture and then using sin waves, and then polar inversion. How I created that metallic texture I really can't remember. Might've been Mandelbrot Fractal (because those were my "Mandelbrot Fractal abuse" days  ) distorted someway, changed to black and white, and then Curves+.

Oops ! Sorry I thought it was water. It really is a beautiful piece, as is so much of your work. If you remember more later, please let me know. I'm working on a water piece and would appreciate some feedback.

  6. Yes, it is already more than just the boots.

Gosh I hope so, he would look pretty silly wearing just glass boots and his knickers !

  7. Well I've recreated them and I think the globe might look a bit better this time so here they are. :)

    Shackled

    th_globe3.png th_globe4.png

Yes, quite nice. I agree, that is what the globe should look like. Very good job, I really like it this way.

I too am kind of a dark thinker. I think there is something in the water supply......

  8. Oh I can see it coming.... the new raptor sig will have a possum in it's mouth as it shakes it from side to side.... Oh no ! Not brother Opie! ( get it, Opie, OP, Opossum...)

Ok seriously, it's been a long day, sorry. Yes, I would really like to see it with something more than the blackness. I can see where you are coming from on it, but it is just too bleak.

I, just to give my humble suggestion, think that maybe Oma's palm leaf tut to create some plant life so it looks like it's jumping out of the deep dark underbrush. You could make the foliage really dark and it would have the effect I think you are looking for. Maybe? Sorry, if you only know how bad this day has been....not in the tragic sense, but in the frustration level. I hope that helps ! My 1.5 cents worth anyway.

  9. @ worldnewser I still have the download of Gimp setting in my downloads folder un-installed. I got started on PdN and then found this site and....and...uh, I never got back to it. Nice image by the way. I've been watching a lot of the coverage this weekend. I remember it like it was yesterday.....but I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday?

    @ Ash, that's what I was thinking....Ahhhh! Get out of my head ! J/K !

  10. I actually do not have a clue what it is, but it seems there's more where it came from :D

    theresmore.th.png

I'll add a fire under it and other slight changes later..

Uh, Yum? I was gonna say a fire then I saw your comment, I thought maybe it was a chemical reaction and might do a spontaneous combustion at any moment. One question though, does it taste like chicken? Seriously, very cool and imaginative, I can smell the eye of newt and bat's wing cooking from here.

  11. @ Possum Roadkill OMG ! you never cease to amaze me :P I'll give it a thought about the Gallery maybe someday when I create more things other than signatures .. How did you get those swirly lines ??

The swirl in the middle was pretty much just random lines (curves, connected) blurred and swirled, and....uh I can't remember which blend mode, I'll have to look it up. The larger lines were pretty much the same thing but were stretched, moved and not swirled (and....uh I can't remember which blend mode, sorry I just got out of bed and haven't finished my coffee, I'm old and don't function well without it).

  12. Yes .Well done that man! :D

I love the Alien Eyeball ! At first I thought it was another ocean pic with an octopus admiring himself in the mirror!

What a good idea ! Hmmm....that would be an interesting project. Thanks man, now if I can just figure out how to do it

Hey, BTW, I posted some tests in my textures page and I was wondering if you guys would take a look at them an tell me what you think. They are three versions of abalone tiles. I've looked at them all day and I need some other eyes to tell me which one looks more realistic. :D

  13. Oma, I think you are on to something but I think another method is needed. Here are a couple of stocks I found that show the detail in abalone that I always think of.

    th_Abalone-stock-photo-1.jpg th_abalone1.jpg

The first one looks to me that it might be achieved with clouds as the starting point. I tried a few things a while back but they were awful  I guess I need to take another shot at it. Let me know what you think might help. :D

  14. @ Sokagirl You are welcome ! Keep up the good work. I read where you deleted your gallery. Oh NO ! You really should put it back up. It has really helped me to have a gallery because people stop in and give suggestions to other pieces and tell you what they do like. It also helps to gauge your progress over time. Sometimes when we do a piece, we don't see it in the same way that other people do and it's really a great learning experience to hear from them what part of an image they see as important. It also gives inspiration to the younger (?) artists. You never know where inspiration will come from and everyone can learn something from anybody. You just never know.

@ Breathe Very nice, I agree with Sokagirl the colors are much more vibrant. One addition I would make would be do slightly blur or fade the edges of the object so it melts/blends into the background. Maybe a gradient blur or a radial transparency. Still, very nice !

  15. It's kind of difficult to do a spacescape in general. The atmospheric dust can be generated easily with the clouds effect, and the stars can be done easily as well, but the texture for the planets aren't so easy.

By the way, I've just made another wallpaper. No PDN involved, it's a fractal flame done with Apophysis. It took almost a half hour to find all the right transforms, so I'm pretty proud with the result.

Once again, it links to my dA.

    :D

Whoa ! Nice ! Now do it in PdN ! I know you can. :D
