layer blending modes-what do they do?

This may sound noobish, but I'm curious what the layer blend modes do, like what's color burn and color dodge? a full list of settings and they're actions would be nice.

Try making something & then creating a new layer then making something slightly different on the top layer & play with the blending modes of the top layer & you'll find out.

Once again, thank you boltbait. But is there a way to make a sig that I'm planning, one with a magnifying glass over a newspaper cutting, and a name under the magnifying glass that bulges, work with the magnifying glass and paper not looking transparent?

Play around with the "Lens" effect under the Effects > Distort menu.

I already have it! I wish i could post the image, but the extension isn't good enough for photobucket I mean that the magnifying glass always ends up looking a bit faded, and the newspaper always looks too transparent when i turn the opacity down.
