Typh
I made this image in Paint.NET just now...I think it kinda speaks for itself... White/Black Text Comparison I was trying to create a site banner with white text when I noticed it looked a bit grainy around the edges... Call me picky, but I don't remember Paint.NET doing this to white text before...
Rick Brewster
Well ... looks mostly fine to me. We switched from using GDI+ to regular GDI for our font rendering a few releases back. GDI+ has horrible problems with text rendering in many areas, although it excels a rendering larger text (and that's about it). You might try drawing text at 2x the size you want, and then using Image -> Resize to cut it down using the Best Quality option. This should give you a softer look on the edges. Rick Brewster
Also, notice that if you invert the colors on that image that the quality of the s-characters trades places. I don't pretend to be a typography expert, so I wouldn't really know what to tweak in order to get things to look perfect (font rendering is a very complicated and involved subject). Typh
Yeah, I noticed that inverting the image switched the quality back and fourth on both sides...I was just wondering why they looked different if all that was done to the image was an invert...I guess it must be more of an optical illusion than anything else. Your tip about resizing of the text seems to work pretty good, though if I ever need to make large, perfectionist-quality text, I think I'll stick to typing it using v2.1b, and then copying it over to my main document in v2.5 b5. You're right; when it comes to large text, GDI+ renders it very well. I guess I got spoiled when it comes to large text quality, as buggy as GDI+ is when it comes to smaller text. Hey, what if you created an option that would allow the user to switch between using GDI and GDI+ to render text? That is, if it's even possible, or doesn't bloat the program, or take to long to do... Just a thought... 8) In any case, even if such a feature were to be implemented, it probably won't happen in time for this next release...but I still think it would be neat if it were even a possibility for a future release... ...eh, just rambling.
