Help with image sizing

Im trying to make a new wallpaper and i cannot for the life of me understand how to resize an image.

My screen is 1680x1050 so i set that as the canvas size. However when i import an image and try to resize it the canvas resizes as well. Is there anyway to resize the image and then i can place it where i want onto the canvas?

You could simply scale it with the .

Select the image, grab a corner nub, drag it (hold shift to keep the ratio).

Or if you want a little more precision, resize it the way you have been, then go to Image -> Resize again and put 1680X1050 in the "Canvas Size" boxes.
