rrvball
I just downloaded paint.net v3.36 and did a little test to see if it would preserve EXIF data correctly. I editted an image and did a "Save As" to create a new image. I viewed the EXIF data using Irfanview and these are the results: before editting: Make - CanonModel - Canon PowerShot A650 ISOrientation - Top leftXResolution - 180YResolution - 180ResolutionUnit - InchDateTime - 2008:08:21 18:22:06YCbCrPositioning - CenteredExifOffset - 196ExposureTime - 1/60 secondsFNumber - 2.80ISOSpeedRatings - 80ExifVersion - 0220DateTimeOriginal - 2008:08:21 18:22:06DateTimeDigitized - 2008:08:21 18:22:06ComponentsConfiguration - YCbCrCompressedBitsPerPixel - 3 (bits/pixel)ShutterSpeedValue - 1/60 secondsApertureValue - F 2.80ExposureBiasValue - -1.00MaxApertureValue - F 2.80MeteringMode - Multi-segmentFlash - Flash not fired, compulsory flash modeFocalLength - 7.40 mmUserComment - FlashPixVersion - 0100ColorSpace - sRGBExifImageWidth - 3000ExifImageHeight - 2250InteroperabilityOffset - 3362FocalPlaneXResolution - 13745.70FocalPlaneYResolution - 13698.63FocalPlaneResolutionUnit - InchSensingMethod - One-chip color area sensorFileSource - DSC - Digital still cameraCustomRendered - Normal processExposureMode - ManualWhite Balance - ManualDigitalZoomRatio - 1.00 xSceneCaptureType - StandardMaker Note (Vendor): - Macro mode - NormalSelf timer - OffQuality - FineFlash mode - Not firedSequence mode - Single or TimerFocus mode - SingleImage size - LargeEasy shooting mode - ManualDigital zoom - NoneContrast - NormalSaturation - NormalSharpness - NormalISO Value - 80Metering mode - EvaluativeFocus type - AutoAF point selected - Manual AF point selectionExposure mode - ProgramFocal length - 7400 - 44400 mm (1000 mm)Flash activity - Flash details - Focus mode 2 - SingleWhite Balance - TungstenSequence number - 0Flash bias - 0 EVSubject Distance - 6553Image Type - IMG:PowerShot A650 IS JPEGFirmware Version - Firmware Version 1.00Image Number - 1001237Owner Name - Thumbnail: - Compression - 6 (JPG)XResolution - 180YResolution - 180ResolutionUnit - InchJpegIFOffset - 5108JpegIFByteCount - 6164 after editting with paint.net and doing a save as: Make - CanonModel - Canon PowerShot A650 ISOrientation - Top leftXResolution - 180YResolution - 180ResolutionUnit - InchSoftware - Paint.NET v3.36DateTime - 2008:08:21 18:22:06YCbCrPositioning - CenteredExifOffset - 308CustomRendered - Normal processExposureMode - ManualWhite Balance - ManualDigitalZoomRatio - 1.00 xSceneCaptureType - StandardExposureTime - 1/60 secondsFNumber - 2.80ISOSpeedRatings - 80ExifVersion - 0220DateTimeOriginal - 2008:08:21 18:22:06DateTimeDigitized - 2008:08:21 18:22:06ComponentsConfiguration - YCbCrCompressedBitsPerPixel - 3 (bits/pixel)ShutterSpeedValue - 1/60 secondsApertureValue - F 2.80ExposureBiasValue - -1.00MaxApertureValue - F 2.80MeteringMode - Multi-segmentFlash - Flash not fired, compulsory flash modeFocalLength - 7.40 mmUserComment - FlashPixVersion - 0100ColorSpace - sRGBExifImageWidth - 3000ExifImageHeight - 2250FocalPlaneXResolution - 13745.70FocalPlaneYResolution - 13698.63FocalPlaneResolutionUnit - InchSensingMethod - One-chip color area sensorFileSource - OtherMaker Note (Vendor): - Macro mode - MacroSelf timer - 16/10 secQuality - NormalFlash mode - Not firedSequence mode - Single or TimerFocus mode - SingleImage size - LargeEasy shooting mode - Full AutoDigital zoom - NoneContrast - High , +4Saturation - High , +1Sharpness - NormalISO Value - 80Metering mode - Center weighted averagingFocus type - ManualAF point selected - Exposure mode - Focal length - 0 - 3 mm (0 mm)Flash activity - Flash details - Focus mode 2 - SingleWhite Balance - AutoSequence number - 0Flash bias - 7.00 EVSubject Distance - 0Image Type - `½úFirmware Version - IMG:PowerShotImage Number - 1001237Owner Name - 50 IS JPEGFirmware VersioThumbnail: - Compression - 6 (JPG)XResolution - 180YResolution - 180ResolutionUnit - InchJpegIFOffset - 3512JpegIFByteCount - 6164 As you can see, there are a few differences in the first part of the data (like Software - Paint.NET v3.36), but that doesn't bother me. It's the data starting with "Maker Note" and after that is all messed up and incorrect after editting with paint.net. Does anybody else see this as a problem? pjotrb123
Hi, Exactly the same happens here, using Paint.Net 3.36 (Win Vista SP1). After saving, some of the existing EXIF-values will have changed to strange values, and one item has gone missing. Example values (before save): InteroperabilityOffset - 3362 FileSource - DSC - Digital still camera Macro mode - Normal Self timer - Off Quality - Superfine Easy shooting mode - Manual Contrast - Normal Sharpness - High , +1 Metering mode - Evaluative Focus type - Auto 'Same' values (after save): InteroperabilityOffset - (no longer present) FileSource - Other Macro mode - Macro Self timer - 16/10 sec Quality - Normal Easy shooting mode - Full Auto Contrast - High , +4 Sharpness - Normal Metering mode - Center weighted averaging Focus type - Manual It so happens to be that my camera is also a Canon Powershot A650 IS, exactly the same as the previous poster. But this shouldn't really matter, should it?? The EXIF values were read from file & copied here using Irfanview 4.23. I can send you the pictures if needed (original + modified). Thanks, Peter
Rick Brewster
This is currently a known issue with the way Paint.NET uses GDI+ for its JPEG and metadata support. AlanV
For what it's worth, when you're ready to address a fix, this problem is not limited to photos originally taken with a digital camera. I am using a free tool called Exif Tool GUI (from http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/) to update scanned positive slides, and I cannot update the camera model on any image I have editied with Paint.Net. I performed 3 experiments to confirm that Paint.Net "corrupts" EXIF data. setup) Scan a slide as a TIF image. 1) Open the TIF file with Paint.Net. Save it as a JPG file. Select the JPG file with Exif Tool GUI. Highlight the EXIF button at the top right to limit the attribute set. Click the arrow underneath the EXIF button to display the change dialog. Edit the camera make and model. Uncheck the backup checkbox. Click the Save button. The reply is "1 files weren't updated due to errors". 2a) Open the TIF file with Microsoft Pro Photo Tools. Add a Name under the Photographer category. Save the file and close it. Select it with Exif Tool GUI. Highlight the EXIF button at the top right to limit the attribute set. Software="Microsoft Pro Photo Tools" and XPAuthor = my name. Click the arrow underneath the EXIF button to display the change dialog. Edit the camera make and model. Uncheck the backup checkbox. Click the Save button. The reply is "1 image files updated". 2b) Open the TIF file with Paint.Net. Save it as a JPG file. Select the JPG file with Exif Tool GUI. Highlight the EXIF button at the top right to limit the attribute set. Click the arrow underneath the EXIF button to display the change dialog. Edit the camera make and model again. Uncheck the backup checkbox. Click the Save button. The reply is "1 files weren't updated due to errors". Please let me know when a fix is available, because I am archiving vacation photos which will eventually be burned to CD with creation date, photographer and GPS data. Thanks!
