Joe G.
My system is Windows XP Home sp2. I have 1 GB of memory and 50 GB of available hard disk space. I wonder if Paint.NET installation has been tested on the home version of XP. I have read the various posts here for any solution to my installation problems. I have installed NET.Framework versions 1.1 and 2.0. I have done the repair installation of version 2.0. The first problems I had was a permissions problem with the registry. I found that a new user, ASP.NET Machine A..., was installed by some time during this struggle. I changed the permissions for the Paint.NET registry intry. I changed the capibilties of the the unexpected new user to administrator. I uninstalled Paint.NET. Note that this system has only one real user, me. After quite a bit of failures in installation I removed all keys and values in the registry that had the strings Paint.NET or PaintDot. I removed all files and folders that had anything to do with Paint.NET. I searched all files for the strings Paint.NET or PaintDot and deleted them. I am still getting this error: The older version of Paint.NET v2.61 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. Now what? Rick Brewster
What other software do you have on your system? The registry permission problem is completely vexing, other people are having this problem as well (as evidenced by the crash reports they are e-mailing me). Joe G.
I don't know what you mean by "other software". I have a lot of stuff on this system so I need to know what sort of things could be suspect as causeing the "older version" problem. Especially when there is no entry in the registry or files on the system with the strings I mentioned in the first post. Except for the installation files of course. Is there some sort of file being accessed by the instalation procedure that does not contain the above strings? I had a problem trying to install v2.6 at first so I installed v2.5. That worked pretty good so I know that I like the program. I had some file type association problems so I decided to try to get around the registry permission problems and install v2.6. That's when I ran into all the problems reported above. Now I can't reinstall v2.5 either. A little bit more about this system. I have it configured as the host of a simple two computer network. Lan cards on both system with a cross over cable connecting them. The other system is my wife's. Access to the web is on my system. We share files by using logical drives on each system instead of shared files.
Rick Brewster
I'm trying to figure out the root cause for the registry permission errors. Paint.NET isn't using the registry in any way that's different than other applications, which points me to some sort of application compatibility issue. What sort of anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, anti-malware, or other security or health software do you have installed? Joe G.
I am using the Microsoft firewall. Anti-virus is AVG. My browser is Firefox and my e-mail is Thunderbird. 'bird has a lot of spam filtering. My ISP inreach also has quite a bit of spam and virus checking. I think most of ISP stuff is before it gets to me. I do run a acceleration product provided my my ISP because I live out in the country so broad band is not available, thus I have do use dial up. Bob
It's not a retricted account problem? Quote No. Way. I've just seen Bob. And... *poof!*—just like that—he disappears into the mist again. ~Helio
Rick Brewster
Are you using a restricted account? Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
Joe G.
No such thing as a restricted account on my system. It's the home version of XP. There was a new user, see above post, that appeared after installing NET.Framework. When I had the permission problem with the registry I changed that account to have administrator privaleges. That may have done something with the registry problem. I don't know since it does not get past the existing version of 2.61 when it is not on my system anywhere problem. Joe G.
Is there any prospect of a solution to this problem? The older version of Paint.NET v2.61 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. Can anyone find out what it is accessing to think that the older version of Paint.NET v2.61 is on the system? All attempts to install it have failed so it has NEVER been on the system. I have delected all references to Paint.NET and PaintDot in the registry and deleteded all files that contain those strings. All active users have administrative privileges. I'm thinking that the failure to install is because of different user handling in the home version of XP. My reading of the description of this in Microsoft Windows XP INSIDE/OUT by Bott, Siechert, and Stinson makes me think that the installation premissions and other privileges have not been tested in the home version of XP. If this were the case I believe we'd have a lot more reports of this error. Please don't make assumptions about what we have or have not done. Did you try the steps listed in the following forum post, especially the last part that details using a "CleanUp" utility? http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=854 . If Windows still believes that Paint.NET is installed, that utility can be used to "force" it to forget about it. Joe G.
Yes I did. I did that before posting my problem. Basically, I downloaded v 2.61 and tried to install it. Failed because of permission problems in the registry. I tried to solve that one. I then downloaded and installed v 2.5. After editing the registry and some fooling around with files and folder I got that version to work. After I tested it for a while I found that the program is very good and does what I want. Then after readed on this web site I decided that I would really like v2.61 so I downloaded it again to make sure I have a good copy of the install file. I uninstalled v2.5 after a failure to install v2.61. After a few more attempts I read all the posts about installation failure and tried all the fixes posted. Then when I still cannot get it to install I started this thread.
Joe G.
In that particular utility Paint.NET was not in the list displayed.
Rick Brewster
Can you post a screenshot of the error you are getting when you try to install 2.61? Joe G.
I can find no way to post an image to this forum unless I have a web site which I do not have. The text in the little window that pops up is: The older version of Paint.NET v2.61 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. plus a little place to click. If you have a way I can post the screenshot I will be happy to do so. I have it saved.

Rick Brewster
Ok that only shows me that specific dialog box. Can you give me a full screenshot? I need some more context (like what part of the installer is behind that dialog box). Joe G.
This one is on the way. There are two files. A complete screen shot with the dialog box plus the window after the dialog box closed.
Rick Brewster
Hmm. Let's try this. Are you familiar with the command-line? If so, run the setup program (PaintDotNet_2_61.exe) with the /createMsi command-line parameter. This should place a new folder on your desktop with 3 MSI installer files in it. Then double click the "x86" one, and see if you get the same error. Joe G.
Ok, just to make sure I'm on the same page. Click on start click on Run enter PaintDotNet_2_61.exe /createMsi on the command line. Is this correct?
Joe G.
I looked up in my inside/out book and ran it. Double clicking on the x86 line resulted in the same error. Do you want a screen shot of that?
Rick Brewster
No, I don't need a screenshot. Try right-clicking on the x86 msi and choosing "Uninstall." Joe G.
I did that. The result was a dialog box with: Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before preceeding with this install. It first asked: Are you sure you want to uninstall this product? I clicked on Yes Then it displayed a box that said: Preparing to remove. After a few seconds I got the "another installtion" dialog box. Rick Brewster
Try restarting your system, then right click on the x86 MSI and choose Uninstall again.
