Got a SetupNgen error during setup? Read this.

Recommended Posts

Lots of people report having trouble while installing, and that an error box comes up saying that SetupNgen had some problem or trouble or whatever.

During setup we use a component of Windows called the Windows Scripting Host. Its functionality is contained in a file called wshom.ocx, and it is registered as a COM component with the GUID of {72C24DD5-D70A-438B-8A42-98424B88AFB8}.

As it turns out, I have just found out that some anti-spyware/anti-whatever software actually classifies this component as potentially unsafe. While this classification is erroneous, it doesn't get rid of the setup errors.

Anyway, we should have a fix for 2.6 Beta 2. This fix will not be backported to v2.5.

rick said "No kidding. The fix is in Beta 2"

sorry, rick, but I've gotta say "not for ME it's not." I've been running paint dot net since 3 or 4 versions back. I got the same -exact- dialog mentioned at top here, even -with- 2.6 beta 2, todays attempt to install. matter of fact, I tried installing paint dot net newest 2 or 3 weeks back, got the dreaded dialog, rebooted, tried again, got same deal, gave it up for a few weeks (hoping a new re 're-tweaked' installer would be posted, or something), so downloaded a fresh installer today, 2.6 beta 2, just minutes ago. I shut down ALL other apps, followed same procedures I've always used (successfully in the past), tried reinstalling 2.6b2, but got same dialog -again- (two attempts to install it so far today)

I'm on XP service pack 2, fully updated, including all the newest framework. I'm 2.66 ghz, a gig of RAM...with-tons- of free space on the drive

gettin' kinda frustrating...

ps-I'm electing a 'custom install', to a hard drive where the OS is -not- located, but where there's -much- more free space (and where paint dot net's always been sussessfully installed before, for whatever that's worth...)

anything I can do? or check? or?

thanks much :-) I appreciate your efforts :-)

thanks for your reply rick

you want screenshots (I assume of the dialog boxes only, not my entire desktops) of my attempts to install which? I also tried (downloading and) reinstalling, out of desperation, (after posting the above) 2.5 today (also to no avail/got same dilaogs). which one you want dialogs of: 2.5 install attempts? or 2.6 beta 2?

ps-also tried disabling winpatrol and SDhelper (part of spybot), but got same results :-(

I'm caught up in an endless loop here. somewhere along the line it told me 2.6 alpha 1 is installed, so I went to add/remove programs, but it won't UNinstall...aww jeeze...

thanks again

The problem is most likely that 2.6 Alpha 1 won't uninstall because of the SetupNgen error. Read my last post in this thread for instructions on effectively nuking the old installation so that you can proceed with the new one, http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewt ... ht=cleanup

And I just need the error message text from 2.6 Beta 2, if you still get it.
