how to add a plain background that is wider than the image

Hello,

 

I need to add a background layer to an image that I currently have, such that the width of the background (with some solid filled color) is larger than the image I have. I need the extra space to make some notes etc. Something like this:

 

 

I can't figure out how to do this, would be glad if someone could help me with this.

Try the "Image > Canvas" size menu.
