Selection rectangle issue

I'm wanting to crop a really skinny image strip, so I'm zooming way in (1000%) and using the rectangle selection tool. However, the selection that is made does not match the coordinates of my mouse cursor. What's more, once the actual cropping is done, it doesn't match what was shown as selected. I don't know if this is a bug with selecting while zoomed or if it relates to the fact that I'm running this under Windows 8 (I tried in Windows 7 compatibility mode, but the same behavior occurs).

 

Is there a known workaround for this? Is there anything I can do to help diagnose the problem?

There is some clumsiness here in 3.5 that has been fixed for 4.0.
