Paint.NET vs Photoshop CS2 problems

Paint.NET only has very basic TIFF support. If by "a-channels" you mean alpha channels, then PNG has that just fine. As for layers, Paint.NET does not support that feature of TIFF. You can only use layers when using the native .PDN file format.

In summary, when working in Paint.NET, PNG is a far superior choice compared to TIFF.

Alternately, have your partner install Paint.NET and exchange images in the PDN format. It's a free program, after all.
