Go to solution Solved by Rick Brewster,

Recommended Posts

Version tested: Paint.NET 5.0.11 on Windows 11

Bug Description:

The Help icon's tooltip is erroneously displayed if Help is activated using the shortcut Alt+H

The tooltip is displayed next to wherever the mouse pointer happens to be at that time.

Reproduction

1. Hover the mouse pointer over the :Help: icon and note that the Help icon's tooltip is displayed as expected.

2. Move the mouse pointer elsewhere.

3. Press Alt+H to activate Help. The Help menu appears as expected.

Note that the Help icon's tooltip is also displayed.

Expected behaviour:

The Help icon's tooltip should not be displayed when Alt+H is pressed.

You don't get a stray tooltip when you press Alt+X for Settings.

Is that because Alt+X displays a dialog versus Alt+H displaying a menu? Or is there some other difference between the Settings and Help buttons?

If nothing can be done to suppress it, then IMO it's better to have a goofy detached tooltip when the user presses Alt+H than to remove it altogether.

The tooltip when hovering the mouse over the :Help: icon reveals information that's useful.

Odd first post.

What update were you expecting?

This looks like one of those weird WinForms-ism bugs. The choice is to either have this goofy behavior, or remove the tooltip altogether.

And then it was agreed that it was preferable to retain the current behaviour in which the tooltip appears next to the mouse pointer when Alt+H is pressed.

Yeah and it’s not something you’ll likely use that often. It’s not like the File menu has this behavior!

Yes, it's a bug, but it has zero impact on your use of Paint.NET
