Change Default File Type When Saving

I would like to change the default file type from png to jpeg.  I work almost exclusively with jpeg and work with many files open at the same time.  It is a major pain in the neck to have to change the file extension every single time I save a new file.

 

I have tried doing it in the Registry with no success.  Any help out there?
