cmolstad
I have a customer that needs to rotate JPEG images but he needs the EXIF data to be retained after the rotate. Does paint.net retain this data?
Rick Brewster
Yes, EXIF metadata is preserved. However, if all you need is rotation, then Paint.NET isn't the best tool for this. Just use the built-in Windows Photo Viewer or "Photos" app and rotate it there. All the rotation does there is modify a special EXIF metadata tag that says "this image is rotate 0 or 90 or 180 or 270 degrees". That way you won't end up decoding and then re-encoding the image, which will reduce its quality (JPEG is a lossy compression format). cmolstad
We told this person before that the Windows photos app can rotate but he said it doesn't do the job. Apparently he needs to fix the orientation put them into Google earth, and the images have geotagged locations. He said "Google Earth does not play well with EXIF orientation." He wanted to use this app called JPEG Autorotate for it but it wasn't approved by the legal team.
Rick Brewster
There might be some GeoTIFF metadata that is not preserved in version 4.2.1. I fixed a bug for the 4.2.2 release, which isn't available yet. You should test the scenario by loading an image, rotating it, saving it, and seeing if the person is satisfied with the result. Not sure why they can't do it themselves though.
