Help with understanding a tutorial

Hello, I found this tutorial about making a VHS effect on images but I don't fully understand it can someone explain it or simply it for me, please. Here is the link:

However, the steps seem to still be intact. Which part are you having issues with?

I don't know what Extract Channel and BlendModes Plus is also Duplicate Layer1 Steps I don't understand that like if you duplicate the layer and then go back to the first layer.

EDIT:   I've moved the plugin links to the top of the tutorial, so they're easier to find.
