Grouping layers together

I would like to submit a feature request.

 

It happens that I have 20-40 layers that I'm working on, and it quickly becomes quite a mess to handle.

 

I would really love if I could create a kind of "Layer folder" or a "Layer group", then put some of the layers in there and:

 - Expand/Collapse a folder so it's rolled down in the layer window

 - Hide/Show all layers in a folder

I saw this in the feature requests list:  Layer "folders", or the ability to organize layers in a hierarchy -- I want this too, and it depends on some major plumbing work being done. This would be a 4.x feature. No ETA.
