Easiest way is to make a new layer, add the colour / gradient that you want, make the layer blend mode overlay, and then use brightness and contrast "Cntrl Shift T" on the first layer till you get the desired effect.

For magic wand tool press Shift+S Almost everything has a shortcut in this program, just got to find them haha.
