Need help with layers

Ok I have read and tried multiple times on getting this layer thing. I am now officially LOST !!!

I have a photograph that I would like to either lighten or remove the background from. Can anyone help please.

Think of layers like transparent sheets of paper all stacked up on top of each other. It can be tricky at first, but keep playing around with it.

As to how to do stuff, if you want to lighten your picture may I suggest "Adjustments -> Brightness & Contrast"...

And to cut people out of a picture, there's an excellent tutorial available in the tutorials section called "Cutting out people the easy way".
