It can be tricky at first, but keep playing around with it. As to how to do stuff, if you want to lighten your picture may I suggest "Adjustments -> Brightness & Contrast"... And to cut people out of a picture, there's an excellent tutorial available in the tutorials section called "Cutting out people the easy way". Welcome!
