Change grey-white squares background

Hello!

Whenever I open a Paint.net (ver. 3.5.1 on Windows 7), the background of the canvas is white. However, when I'm "deleting" any section, it becomes "colored" with grey-white squares.

Is this squares background necessary :?: Can the background be always a simple white :?:

(The question was asked by my 5.5y/o son who's learning to work with the software. This background is really annoying him :wink:)

the gray & white checkerboard indicate transparency

if it really annoys him, simply create a new layer and fill with a color, and move it down :Down: below the layer with transparency
