Making a Comic Need Some Tips

So I downloaded PDN because it was easier than getting photoshop and I needed to resize some characters. I've resized what I've needed and I've given everything a transparent background. But how do I paste the characters onto the backgrounds that will be used in panels so it blends and it remains transparent? Because when I paste characters over I see the transparent checkerboard remaining and it takes part of the image away. How do I fix this? Also, is there any easy way to add a glowing texture to an image?
