Verified. Thanks.

We all know the layer below the mouse is the active (selected) layer in the Layers window.
But quite often you have no idea which layer belongs to the visible pixel at the mouse position.
For sure the pixel is a composite constructed from rgb values, alpha channels, layer opacities and blend modes on different layers. Means there is no biunique solution. Still here is a proposal:
Show in the statusbar the name of the layer at the mouse position.
Calculate the layer to show in the following way:
From top to bottom if the layer is visible if the alpha value of the pixel at the layer is greater zero (or a tolerance value) then you are done If no layer could be found show "No layer". If the mouse position is out of document bounds show nothing. If the layer is active then show the name in bold else normal.
I could also imagine a tool to activate a layer identified in this way (maybe showing the layer name as tooltip)
Or a shortcut to select the layer.
I implemented this in one of my applications and it's a real help.
-
One additional information may be whether these items show the highlighted background on hovering or not.
-
I would expect that the ToolStrip renderer has been changed to allow the puzzle symbol for external plugins.
Plus the code to show the copyright info in the tooltip. Maybe there is a small issue.
-
I'm slow pressing a button is so hard ;-)
You are right. It's the combination
hardware acceleration=Off
Animation=on
Changing one of them works.
But
hardware acceleration=On
shows artifacts in the area of the nubs as I reported earlier.
In the moment it is easy enough to use Deselect.
-
If a "PNG" and a "CF_BITMAP" is on the clipboard then Paint.NET takes the CF_BITMAP.
"PNG" aloneon the clipboard works as expected and preserves the alpha channel.
-
That isn't just 4.0, that's been true for a while. As long as I can remember.
For sure. But we should also take the chance to remind some quirks.
-
Start Paint.NET
Menu->Edit->Select All
Choose tool: Move Selected Pixels from Tools panel.
Menu->File->New...
Now if you are clicking OK or pressing Return then nothing happens. The dialog stays open.
Cancel, Close and Escape works. OK is not disabled. It enters the pressed state on click. Just no action on releasing the button.
After a Deselect the New dialog works as expected.
But again after
Menu->Edit->Select All
Choose tool: Move Selected Pixels from Tools panel.
Menu->File->New...
OK is blocked.

"Paste in to New Layer" needs two undo steps to be undone. This is not a big thing if you know it. Just unexpected.
-
if some of the tools are active (i.e. "Move Selected Pixels*, "Move Selection", "Shapes").
-
I would check the content of the clipboard with a tool like this one:
http://forums.comsquare.ch/viewforum.php?title=DaDRoots
The screenshot above shows which elements are placed by Paint.NET 4 on the clipboard.
-
Select the shapes tool. There you will find line, spline curve and bezier curve.

Here is how to use Recolor:
a) Select the Recolor tool.
Select your final color (here black) as primary color.
c) Control Right click a source color (here a gray line). This sets the secondary color.
d) Increase the brush width to 10
e) Choose a tolerance depending on which source color you selected (i.e. 20%)
Now if you are painting on top of the gray lines they will change their color
Disadvantage of recolor is that the result on antialiased lines may not be as expected.
Here are two other possibilities
1) Use Adjustments->Curves in Lumiosity mode. Move the control point in the left bottom corner to the right bottom.
2) Use Adjustments->Levels. Move the marke in the middle of the output slider to the bottom,
If you like to keep the numbers gray then first use magic wand with a proper tolerance to select the lines.

BTW: As far as I know Windows does not support a direction in the mouse wheel message. The application decides on its own if the message is used for a vertical or horizontal scroll or for a complete different action.
Ok, I have to say now that just .NET doesn't seem to support it. But Microsoft introduced WM_MOUSEHWHEEL together with a new mouse device which allows to tilt the mouse wheel (which genereates WM_MOUSEHWHEEL messages).
This article describes a possible binding by introducing OnMouseHWheel().
I found an interesting statement from MS here: "Make the mouse wheel affect the control, pane, or window that the pointer is currently over. Doing so avoids unintended results."
So w/o owning the focus all controls should handle the mouse wheel. How this can be done using an MouseWheelRedirector is described here.
-
Whenever I try to use layer properties it doesn't do anything.
So clicking the item does not open the layer properties dialog?
-
Just for completeness. Instead of Delete you may press
- Backspace to fill with the primary color
- Shift Backspace to fill with the secondary color (PDN4 only)
- 1
-
Just create the new image then press Ctrl-A (Select All) and Delete (Fill with transparent color).
-
If paintbrush tool is selected and you are just clicking outside of the image area then an entry in the history will be generated.
This is not the case in 3.5.11.
-
Typically trackpads do not simulate a MouseWheel command instead they are sending scroll commands to the scrollbars of the window below the mouse pointer. And quite often this depends on a whitelist in the trackpad driver. So if it works in one application then this does not mean that it works in an other.
BTW: As far as I know Windows does not support a direction in the mouse wheel message. The application decides on its own if the message is used for a vertical or horizontal scroll or for a complete different action.
I had to add some commands to my Synaptics trackpad to allow two finger zoom in and out in Paint.NET (these commands simulate a mousewheel command together with a pressed control key).
-
Hi Ariela, there is a strict rule that this forum does not support old versions of Paint.NET (see forum rules). So please update to 3.5.11.
In general if you are getting bad values in measurement then the DPI setting of your image is not correct (so check the value in Image->Resize... and adapt it there).
If the DPI settings are correct then you may also use the MeasureSelection plugin.

The file size is 20.4 MB. I thought it may be, but i was under the impression
that was what the plug in changed.
The filesize is not important because it contains compressed data.
A rough calculation of memory size is: (Number of Layers + 3) * pixel width * pixel height * 4.
-
Sorry, but you can't do this. Plugins are not allowed/able to modify the area outside of the selection.
paint.net 4.0 alpha build 5143 is now available

The Pan and the Zoom Tool show the "Selectiion Clipping Mode" option (new in PDN4). Makes no real sense, or?
