  1. Hi, I hope I'm posting to the right area. I just crashed while editing an existing image. There was only a black and white gradient on the active layer. For the first time, I noticed the error message was for a plugin, and then noticed the button for more information, so I clicked it and took a screenshot: Reading it, it appears that I don't have adequate memory. I have 6 gigs of Ram and nothing else but a browser running. In this situation, I tried the "random" feature to see what effects might look good but after 5-6 effects, it crashed. Does this mean the plugin requires an insane amount of memory or perhaps, it's not releasing memory between random effects? Also, previously, when I crashed, I could rename the image. However, this time, I chose to save and it simply wrote over the existing image w/out prompting for a name or path. I couldn't stop it from saving over my original file. This was unexpected. Was this recently changed? Thanks for your help. PS. my plugins are up to date and I already upgraded to the new PDN version a coupe days ago.
  2. I'm not sure why you think I don't restart PDN. I have no choice. I have to restart. It prompts to restart and asks me if I want to save the image first, but when I save it, it either only saves one layer or it saves all layers merged. I do save often. When this log was generated, I had PDN open while I was sleeping and after an earlier crash.
  3. To StevenEisner, As a suggestion, read this MS support post (as the comments apply to Windows 7): http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/b479c64e-ff92-40fc-9e0b-ee2410c72bfd While the original question is related to Vista and the support board is supposed to be for Vista, Microsoft Support provided detailed instructions on how to repair .NET 3.5 and the installer on Windows 7. Starting at the top of the post, look for the first post by Naman R., Microsoft Support, Moderator, and follow-up posts with similar info. Based on your comments, it sounds like you turned .NET 3.5 off completely and didn't re-enable it. If you follow the linked instructions, it does provide the proper method of repairing the framework and installer. I hope the link helps in some way.
  4. I don't know if this is a plug-in problem or an issue with PDN. For a couple days now, I've lost my work (images w/multiple layers of effects applied) to PDN crashing as I'm editing. I tried to attach the pdncrash.log to this post but apparently, I don't have permission to post a log. This error was returned, "Error You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file". I don't have access to my email right now, so I hope I can paste the log here and it will reach the right person. If I am causing the app to get confused, can someone please tell how to prevent this issue from recurring? If not, I understand. Here's the log from my desktop (note: i've crashed numerous times in the last 2 days but it only saved to the log once): This text file was created because Paint.NET crashed. Please e-mail this file to crashlog@getpaint.net so we can diagnose and fix the problem. 5. It's been a long time since I worked with PNG files online, and I'm currently tryig to save a file but I can't remember how to display PNG properly on older browsers, like IE6. In other words, transparent areas don't turn gray if you save the file so the pixels are opaque without varying levels of transparency. I've done it in the past with Photoshop so I know it's possible to save the file for ie6. There is *slight* degradation in the image. It's also still 100% better than gif transparency and you don't have to worry about any fixes when an ie6 user views the images. I guess I'm hoping someone can explain the proper settings. I don't quite understand PDN's Alpha settings for PNG. If I set the alpha to 255, should that eliminate semi-transparent pixels? I did try the setting but it did not work. However, I might be doing something wrong. Thanks in advance for your help.
  6. My problem with the name, Steves Place, on Vista Home Premium is explained here: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-administration-accounts-passwords/58688-i-cant-change-user-folder-name.html When my computer was originally setup by my father, he callled it Steve's Place. After he setup the PC, installed other software and gave it to me, I changed the name, Steve's Place, to Sensei. Although it appears as Sensei 90% of the time, the old name Steve's Place wasn't actually dropped or changed by Vista. Home Premium refuses to drop the name completely. Instead, it basically masks the old name with the new name. Although the name appears as Sensei on the surface, Steves place still appears in the registry and from time to time, such as when I'm downloading or installing software, the old name appears within a path, even though the name is sensei & I'm logged in as sensei. Unfortunately, there's no easy way for a Home Premium user to remove the original root name without completely wiping out the hard-drive and reinstalling Vista from step one. I can't do that because I will lose other software. Microsoft didn't include user profile snap-ins or the admin features that allow changes via the Management Console with Home Premium. Apparently, they did this to prevent Home users from breaking their PCs. Paint.net is not installed under a user folder. The application path is: C:\Program Files\Paint.NET (i used "copy address as text" via explorer + pasted the address above.) When I install any program, I login as the root admin, Sensei. Sensei is the current name of Steve's Place, the root admin account. I don't know why Paint.net is referencing that path but the current name is Sensei. I have installed/uninstalled/deleted/reinstalled Paint.net four times now. It crashes with the previously posted error. However, if I use "run as administrator", the application works okay but I prefer to use it normally, if possible. It's also odd because I have to select Run As Admin when I'm logged in as the Admin to use Paint.net w/out crashing. I have successfully installed the following applications since my last install of Paint.net: Pixia Gimp PSPad dirHTML CCleaner Download Studio Google Sketchup Dreamweaver CS4 misc MS Updates Only Paint.net errors. Based on my results, I am confident in my ability to install an application, and do not understand how the problem could be caused by something that I'm doing. I can't delete all the references to Steves Place within Vista's many files & the registry, even if I attempt it from another admin account. Vista refuses to completely drop the name. I upgraded to 3.5 sp 1 after the second install because I thought that might be my problem but the app still crashed. I then switched a service option (can't remember the name) to "manual" install (as mentioned in one of your posts), rebooted, downloaded Paint.net again, and reinstalled again. It didn't help and the same error persisted. I'm just letting you know because I spent a lot of time on this before I posted this thread. Also, I want to correct something stated earlier... I guess there is a folder Steves Place that appears when installing or downloading. However, that name is not the current name. Hope that make sense. I appreciate your time and any advice you can provide. Thank you
  7. Hi, Sorry to say this, but did you read my entire post? There is NO Steves place. Please read the bottom of my post. I can't be the only person with this problem. If you Google Vista Home and how to change the default admin on a PC , you will find 1000s of posts (mainly complaints) on how Vista handles the renaming of a default profile. Thank you & sorry for the hassle.
  8. Hello, I have read through the FAQ & other posts but I don't think my issue is listed. I have downloaded/unstalled/rebooted/reinstalled Paint.net 4 times with no success. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To use Paint.net, I have to use "run as administrator" and it seems to work okay that way but I fear it's going to crash which means losing my work. Any idea on the problem? This PC used to be named Steve's Place and there's no way to drop the reference to Steve's Place from appearing at times. However, the folder Steve's place does not exist. The folder/profile are actually called Sensei and I am logged in as Sensei, the main admin (default user) who used to be Steve's Place. It's confusing but this is apparently an intentional feature of Vista. In other words, MS purposely made it impossible to change the default user/admin once a name exists. You can actually change the name but it will always reference the old/original default name within the registry and certain paths. Is it possible Paint.net doesn't know how to recognize Steve's Place as Sensei? I've only encountered this with Paint.net, or when I've tried to save a file manually to Sensei vs. Steve's Place. At times, even if I can see the name under Windows explorer and open files within Steve's Place, it will not recognize the path if I try to save an existing file w/in Steve's Place. However, if I open a file from the user folder for Sensei and then try to save with the full path using Sensei, it will tell me that the Sensei path doesn't exist, even if I select it from the drop-down. When that happens, I have to manually type Steves Place and then save. The file then appears under Sensei. It's very confusing, and my need to change the path seems vary by location on the PC. At times, sensei works and at other times, i can only use steves place even though I'm always logged in as sensei. Perhaps Paint.net crashes when it doesn't recognize a profile name that it may see but can't physically find because it doesn't really exist or perhaps it can't recognize a reference to a new name. It's my understanding that the naming confusion will happen if the default user's name changes after initial setup w/Vista Home. I haven't a clue but hope this little bit of info helps correct the problem. Hope someone can help. Thank you very much.
