Repaints for FSX using layers ?

Is there a good step by step Paint.net tutorial for Flight Simulator X aircraft repaints using layers ?,  I've tried tutorials for Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro etc, but no luck, plus Paint.net looks to be the easiest to use.  Thanks
