Troubles Formatting Image

I am having troubles when I go to format 1 picture that will have 3 seperate pictures all side by side in it. I am tryign to figure out how I can format just the image and not the template behind the image. Here are the steps I go through when I go to do this project

1. I open the picture

2. I open up a blank template

3. I go back to my original picture I opened

4. I click edit and then go to select all

5. I the click edit and go down to cut

6. I then go over to my blank template and paste the picture in there

7. I then go to image and click resize

8. I type in my width and heights for my picture
