I was thinking of taking out the background and wolf body, and embossing it, but how do you emboss a different color?

What I want to do is, take away the wolf body and background. Then I want to make his face sorta fade with a gold lining of his face. SO it wouldn't be exact detail, but you know it's the face of a wolf, with cool gold out lines and lines on the inside and stuff. With like faded areas for cool effect. Can you guys give me suggestions or how to ideas.

I deleted all the background on an image. Then I saved it. Now every time I open it, the checkered pixels is all white. So when I try to make layers with the photo in the front, the white background of the photo gets in the way. How to replace all the white with the checkered pixels without having to delete all the white again?
