Jumper

Hello people I have just downloaded Paint.NET after it being recommended as the poor student's Photoshop, and everything was going great. Then I tried inserting some text: click on the text tool and start typing, is what I thought I should do. I did that, and nothing happened, I've hunted through all my layers but no sign of any lettering. What am I missing? Please help.
