o but the picture i wana improt has a white background how do i fix that or do i have to cut the sword out of the white background so it is just the sword

i want to make a sig but idk how to like bring the picture i want to put on it onto a new layer thing whenever i create a background and press open and select the picture it deletes everything and only has the picture as a background
