  1. No, no. I think that it would work: I've participated in many debates in the past which have been locked, not because they became offensive, but because they went on for so long that the original thread became impossible to salvage. I feel that with the present community we have here would accept the spirit of the thread and it would become an incredible success. I'd love to sling my guns around in there!

  2. Rubrica, of course there's a reason to detest smoking. There are several in fact. There is substantial evidence that inhaling carcinogens from the bloody potato in a ciggy can cause lung cancer. And the smoke smells foul and is intrusive. And the tar in that cigarette is the same tar with which the road is paved.

    Those good enough for you?

  3. @ tHS, I hate to break it to you, but what you are suffering from is what we in the trade call boredom. You've just come back from a once-in-a-lifetime holiday where most likely you frittered away the hours in some kind of an off-hand way, until early in the morning. It's more than likely you barely saw your family.

Now you're back in suburbia and nothing can compare to your holiday. You're just bored. That's all it is.

@ Rubrica: I'm at probably the most snooty state school in the area and I believe that I speak in a manner that some may describe as "posh". It's probably a good vocabulary and decent pronunciation that does it. Just chuck a few ironic "innits" into your speech and make a joke out of it.

Or consider it this way: if there are people who choose to discriminate against you because you speak "poshly" (I've always that to mean that you habitually speak better than they do), then they're just fools. Don't let it get you down.

  4. Rubrica, it seems to me that you don't need one. Think subtle build-up rather than trite cliché. It's harder to pull off, but if you can do it well, it'll be brilliant.

I'd be very interested to hear more about this novella of yours. I'd like to write something novel-like but I can't get the creative juices flowing any more.
