There's also a good chance I am thinking about this totally illogically and there's a very easy to find plugin that achieves this effect. Any help would be appreciated so long as it fixes my problem, even if it doesn't have anything to do with the cursor.

When using the paintbrush tool, it appears as a circle around a central +. When you left click, the central + disappears. Is there an option for the + to remain visible when left clicking? Currently I am using a very large brush size and painting a very broad line beneath a much thinner one, and it is making it hard to guesstimate the centre of the brush circle after I left click and the + sign disappears. It would be much easier to keep the lines aligned if the + was always visible.
