One thing other editors do is allow you to click Shift or Alt (or some other combination) to "lock" the erase tool (or paintbrush) in the direction you start dragging it. So you can quickly just click and erase in a line, without shifting to the left/right or up/down from where you started. This might be a nice feature to add at some point.
