Popular Science Magazine Recently ran an article on their website about open source alternatives to Photoshop CS2 and Paint Shop Pro X. Although Gimp and Gimpshop kinda stole the spotlight in the article, a link was provided for Open Source Alternative ("A quick online guide to the best open source software.") where Paint.NET is duly listed as a viable alternative to the afore mentioned heavy hitters.
Well I don;t really understand where is the attraction in GIMP. It has a huge learning curve and the controls just suck. If anyone asks me about a good open source alternative to Photoshop I would instantly mention Paint.Net without batting an eyelid.
