OK, so I'm not an idiot, but I am a frustrated non-idiot. I practically never use PNG.
This would be an extremely useful setting. I hope the Paint.NET devs are gathering feedback from this forum. User preferences seem to be a real weakness in the app. In many ways I'm thoroughly impressed and recommend it to lots of people, but this seems to be a hole. I'll also submit this feedback through the Help menu.
