[Paint.NET v3.5.1 is now available]

If anyone's getting Error 1603 with this update, just change the installation folder to "C:\PDN" (or "C:\Paint.NET" but I'm not sure). See this post for more details.

You can all it "C:\Any name you want" and it'll still work. I'm fairly sure it's due to the staging directory being a subdirectory of the main installation destination

The updater can handle non-default installation locations.

But not if you've manually moved Paint.NET after you installed it.

Since that wasn't done with this solution, any chance of sticking it up in the troubleshooting sticky so people can be referred there for this problem as well?

I have a suspicious feeling though that it'll screw up any issues with updating the software since it won't be in the location that Paint.NET expects it to be, but perhaps a little extra bit of win32 code to allow the update executable to locate the program manually would do the trick.

I tried to install PDN 3.5.1 and had error 1603. I read through the sticky at the top of the page and none of that helped. I couldn't find anything on the forums that would get rid of the error without system restores, windows reinstalls and all manner of long and unnecessary procedures.

I did find a solution though. I've not tested it with upgrades from previous versions as this is the first time I've used PDN, but during the installation options if you change the installation directory from the default C:\Program Files\Paint.NET directory to another directory outside of Program Files (C:\PDN for example) then you have no problems with the installation. (I'm not sure if you can install into the Program Files folder, I'll have to find time to look into that)

I'm not an expert programmer, but it would probably be a good idea with the next release to have the extracted files put into the c:\windows\temp folder before being installed into the destination folder as it seems the error for most people is due to the files being copied from the staging subfolder into the parent folder.
