Sorry to ask a question that seems so simple as to be, probably, obvious to more experienced users,
but I really have read the relevant sections in the Help, the FAQ, and searched the forums with
several permutations of the relevant search terms and phrases.
I could probably figure a workaround; what I want to know is if the task can be done directly, as in directly
filling a closed shape with a gradient fill. One of my concerns is to keep to a single layer so that I can use
that layer's transparency properties in subsequent steps to my final result.
Thanks in advance to whomever takes the time to jot down the steps, or point me in the right direction, it is
much appreciated. And to the creators of Paint.net - this app is so much easier to use for everyday stuff than
just about everything out there. Thanks to you too.

Excellent. Thanks. I was missing the part about making a selection, and I would have never guessed
it would work that way.
