I don't understand what you mean by duplicating a background, but to delete something from the background, use the magic wand a select the object. If it is different colors, set the tolerance higher. Then hit the delete button. If there us stuff left over use the eraser. you can't fill in the empty area with a LOT of work, so if that's what you wanted, I'm sorry, can't help you.
