I figured it out somewhat by chance.
When I pasted the 2nd screenshot into a new layer, it was 'selected' and didn't 'deselect' when I added a new layer to put my text on.
I assumed that when I selected the text tool and clicked on the screen, the previous selection box would automatically be 'deselected'. I took a chance and hit the unselect icon on the menu bar and like magic, I could type new text again and have it visible.
Is there a reason that the program behaves in this fashion - a graphic design/artistic/editing reason that is? I would just like to know, as it seems unnatural to me.

Disclaimer: I',m not a graphic artist - have only used photoshop LE (version 5 maybe) a few times when I needed to do some layer-capable image editing.
I'm trying to do something very simple I would think:
1. I have a screenshot of a program I am using. I want to notate the screenshot with some text. I did that on the base layer - success.
2. I added a new layer of an error message I receive when I use the program - I pasted it and it was smaller than the original layer - so far so good - the error message image is sitting there and the text I added in step 1 is visible.
Next, I want to add more text. I can only make it visible over the image I added in step 2. It is invisible if I add the text anywhere past the border of the image from the layer I added in step 2.
I've tried adding a 3rd layer just for the new text, and again, it only will be visible if I move it so that it overlaps the image area/location in step 2.
What am I doing wrong?
