Pretty sure it's a Windows shell extension with a buggy thumbnail provider. Try navigating to that folder with the File->Open dialog in another application, and make sure the view is set to Thumbnails. 99% sure it will also crash there. In which case this is not a Paint.NET error.
Yes indeed, it does crash when I did what you said. OK... now, any idea how to solve that problem? Is there any way to set PDN to not view things in Thumbnail view?
This is going to be frustrating because I cannot really use the program without problems. Any help, directions or advice otherwise would be helpful indeed.

Stupid question: You do have Paint.NET v3.22, right?
Out of all the things I had listed you would have thought I would have listed that... my mistake and I am sorry about that.
Yes, I do have the latest version.
As an Addendum to my problem I got the program to crash when I navigated into the "My Documents" folder. I didn't even have to do anything, it just crashed and no log file.

I will try to make this problem as clear as humanly possible because it is kind of hard to describe.
The program crashes when I try to open an image from a different folder than the one that appears when I choose the "Open" option. The program also does NOT generate a log file for the crash... I have looked and searched the entire computer for the log file and it simply isn't there.
The best way to describe this is to walk through the steps until it crashes:
1. With PDN open I click the "Open" folder on the tool-bar
2. I navigate to another folder to open an image file
3. When I try to scroll down with the scroll bar in that new folder the program crashes and gives me the wonderful Microsoft crash window (not the Blue Screen Of Death) and then the option to send an error report
This could be relied upon to happen each time I tried to work on something a few days ago. Oddly enough, while writing this post and going through the steps, the program was fine and did not crash. The kid is always better when you take him to the doctor.
I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005 with Service Pack 2. 3GHz processor, 2GB RAM. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon XPress 200 Series with the latest drivers. I have Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.5 according to my Add/Remove programs menu. All my Windows updates are current and I have done virus and spyware scans.
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. If you need more information please let me know. I thank you in advance for your time.

OK. Now the really big questions are what will that do to my system and how do I do it?
If you would rather PM me on this than take up the board that is fine... but I am sure that I am not the only one who has had this happen.
Once again, thanks for your time.
