Hmm...did you try going onto Control Panel;Add or Remove Software and find Paint.NET and uninstall (assuming you use Windows XP). Well, you could always try and re-download Paint.NET here.

Yeah, the Magic Wand isn't that good for extracting people, but it's very useful in many other ways!
-
Well, actually Rich, I think I might go try out that search engine. I doubt it will give me any satisfying results though, because I was browsing through some tutorials and the ones that require cutting things out mention using the Curve method, so it seems that it's the best one out there.... for now. Perhaps thinking about some kind of extraction method for the 4.xx releases?

Thanks to all of you guys for replying. I'm actually referring off of Crazy Man Dan's tutorial, and that's a nice effect, Enormator. Problem is, I'm actually referring to extracting a person from a background and as you know, a person isn't one primary color. I can't imagine how a plugin for Alpha-Masking would work....though I know nothing about Alpha-Masking. :? Oh, and I'm really looking forward to the 4.xx releases (nevermind that they're 2 years away) because of the custom brushes. It really is a disadvantage for Paint.NET not to have that feature.

I was looking through some forums, and I came across an extraction method called Alpha-Masking and loved the idea until it came to actually making the mask. I find it EXTREMELY hard to draw the mask by hand with the paintbrush and curve tool! Is there an easier method drawing a mask?

Which method do you use? Like, for extracting a single person from a background.

You can always post your image as a thumbnail instead. Try putting a th_ in front of the image name, this is what I did within your quote. For example...
(examples show parentheses () where brackets [] should go.)
Instead of: (img)http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o234/germanoma/gun008.png(/img)
Try: (img)http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o234/germanoma/th_gun008.png(/img)
Also, if you want the thumbnail picture clickable to show the full resolution you can try: (url=http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o234/germanoma/gun008.png)(img)http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o234/germanoma/th_gun008.png(/img)(/url)
And that will give you this:

If you click this picture it will open another window that will be the full size picture.
Hope this helps.
Lol this should do the trick!

I'm sorry if a lot of people have already posted this question, but I was wondering if there was any way of easily cutting out a person from the background? I've already tried this and this but they are both extremely hard to get every detail right. I liked the Alpha Masking until it got to the masking. Anyone have any ideas?

Ummm not too sure but all I know is that you can download either a water reflection plugin:
http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2911
Or a regular reflection plugin:
http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2520
The only difference is that the water reflection plugin give the reflection a more ripply effect.

Lol yeah this topic is kinda like a tutorial! I tried it out on Miley Cyrus and this was the result:
I thought it worked out pretty good! I'll be using this technique a lot now!

Is there any way that maybe someday Paint.NET will support user made brushes?
-
Yeah the feathering works really good

I was wondering if anyone could make a tutorial on how to crop a person from a background, so you can totally replace the background around the person. I tried using THIS technique, but the pic doesn't look right. It's too.....rounded and I can't get every single detail. Can somebody please help?

Great plugin! It works really good! It's a lot better than lassoing a part of an image and gaussian blurring it!

Great tut!

Yet another feature request (this time it's about masking)

I was looking over some of the many topics requesting magnetic lasso, and I decided to see how the magnetic lasso actually works. So, I searched it and found a tutorial on cutting things out for Photoshop. One tool that helped them cut the image out so easily was the Quick Mask feature. So it's basically a quick version of Alpha-Masking. This is something Rick should seriously think about putting into the 4.xx versions.
