[Request - A New Tool For Selecting]

Seeing how the quick selection tool is one of the most used selection tools in photoshop, I think it would be cool to have the tool for paint.net too. I've used quick selection tools in photoshop trial versions and in Serif's PhotoPlus, and it is a really nice, easy tool.

However, I think racerx is right. A good alternative is to add a new layer and then use drawing tools (like line/curve tool, paint brush, etc.) to trace and paint over any areas you want selected. Then use the magic wand tool to make the selection. (like sampled here.)

I actually like to trace/outline my objects and make solid black shapes of the object, and then I use the Alpha Mask plugin to cutout objects or separate objects from their backgrounds. The Alpha Mask plugin sometimes lets things have nicer edges vs using selection tools. If the object is on it's own layer, I can then do whatever I want to it, like recolor it or add effects to it.

 

Even with good workarounds, the Quick Selection tool still gets my vote for ease of use and as the name implies, it's a quick way of doing things.

My idea is pretty similar to that tool in PS yeah.

I wasn't aware of that method Racerx mentioned before, but it is pretty logical.

That Alpha Mask plug-in is pretty cool, I might actually get that!

I don't know how much use that plugin would be.

 

I actually use the pencil tool for extraction purposes all the time. I prefer that to the lasso tool.

 

1) I just add a blank layer on top of the image.

2) Use the pencil tool on blank layer to trace the object in image layer.

3) Use magic wand to select the pencil region, switch to image layer and extract object.   

 

I like using pencil tool because it's easy to correct mistakes with eraser tool.

Oh, I'd never thought of that. While I think the plug-in would be a bit quicker, your idea definitely works.

Sorry if this particular tool has already been requested, but I haven't seen it yet:

A tool that is either a brush or pencil, that selects every pixel you 'draw on'.

So the brush version is size-customizable like the normal brush, (it could have other settings, I'm sure) but it selects the pixels instead of painting on them!
