changing image file extension

Hello, manoel.

You can't automatically, no. You will have to do it manually via the drop down menu in Save dialog.

Bear in mind, though (as you may actually know, hence the request), that Paint.NET will revert back to the default PNG format each time you open the Save As dialog for a new - that is new canvas - flattened image (.pdn for a layered file); Save As will retain the previous format for the same open canvas.
