Image editor for Mac. Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've been using paint.net for over a year now and am getting better each time I use it. Here's the thing. a Friend of mine asked me to do her a favor (a pic modification of some sort). Anyway i went to her house and she had a mac so when i wanted to install pdn there, tough luck, pdn only works on pc.

I searched for an image editing program for mac but i found nothing. Does Anyone know an image editor for mac? - by the way i don't wan't to be advertising here i'm just asking so don't take this the wrong way

Go for The GIMP. I've been using the program for four years now, so odds are if you have any questions, I can answer them. ;)

The interface is different - three windows instead of one with modal sub-windows - but it works pretty much the same: Rectangular and Elliptical selections, Fill tool for filling, Gradient tool for gradients, Paintbrush, Pencil, and Layers-based editing. The Effects are under the "Filters" menu item, Adjustments under the "Colors" menu item, the Layers and Image menus manipulate the selected layer and the entire image respectively, with selection modification tools are under the Select menu.

One big difference is how selection resizing is handled: unlike Paint.NET, where you use the Black Arrow to scale and rotate the selected pixels, and the White Arrow to scale and rotate the selection, in The GIMP, there are individual tools for each task - Scale, Rotate, Shear, and Perspective adjustment - and each has a selector button under the Tool Options dialog for selecting what it will manipulate - the image, the selection, or the currently-selected vector path.

Also unlike Paint.NET, there are no "Shape" tools. Instead, in The GIMP you draw a selection and fill it to create that shape. Since The GIMP has anti-aliased selections, this works for smooth ellipse shapes as well. If you just want an outline, you can create the selection, fill the selection, then choose Select > Shrink, set the amount to whatever width you want for your outline, click OK, then press delete.

All in all, once you get used to it, The GIMP is quite a powerful image editor. It's not as friendly as PDN, but it's still usable. ;)

Okay, I agree with the others GIMP is the best. I find the effects quite good, which in cases, Is good for making signatures. The time used to make it is about 10-20 minutes but a good outcome. I made a few with this that were quite good. I have made only fewer than you know, only having it for 3 months and is using PDN right now! The smudge tool is quite good if you're making a smudge-brush painting. GIMP is located here. If you have any questions not stated above PM me.

Regards,

Jordan.

The Mono version of Paint.NET is nowhere near usable.

iPhoto, the photo software that comes with the iLife suite for Mac, is more of a gallery management program than an "editor". It has basic support for cropping, rotating, resizing and the like, but it's not a photo editor a la PDN, GIMP, or PS.
