Bobofthedead
This is a thread... about literature! [/quelle suprise!] It's a place to discuss books, poems and plywood kitchen cabinet instruction manuals you have read recently; and a place to discourse on scraps of doggerel. In short, it's a place to talk about words, and their effects on you. Have fun! Let's start: Has anyone read Les Mis? Does anyone else think that in the final chapters, Jean Valjean is unfairly slated for his past misgivings? Valjean, at the end of the book seems like a pretty good guy - why does Hugo make him hate himself so much? Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" I dig a pygmy, by Charles Hawtree and the Deaf Aids. Phase One, in which Doris gets her oats. ~John Lennon
Max Power
Imho Valjean was far more than a fairly good guy. This can be seen in the scene when an innocent person is accused to be Valjean and Valjean reveals his identity with the effect that he has to go to prison again and loses everything he has. I think Valjean was a truly althruistic guy who was driven by unfair forces in affiction, which denounced and internal hardened him. I hope somebody understands what I try to say in english Did anybody read the book Joseph Heller - Catch 22? It's my absolute favorite book. I read it in english twice and watched the movie too. Bobofthedead
I understand perfectly, but I'm not actually sure it can be explained... Good example though - I forgot that one... Catch-22! That is a brilliant book! I just love it; every single page of it - it's just so crazy, it almost mirrors real life! Henry
Literature is irrelevant to survival of the human race. Vocal cords are a sufficent means of communication. harold
I like The Belgariad and most books from Modesitt (especially the Recluce series) I also like the Intel Optimization Manual but does that count as literature? Bobofthedead
Ooh! And the action's hotting up over in the Literary Corner! Hey, that's a good name for a thread! Oh, and has anyone read Life Of Pi? Whadayya think? Which story of Pi's is real, the animal one or the people one? Please don't be so insulting, and try not to turn into another Kreeos. same to you. You criticize all the time everybody without being even slightly constructive. IMHO you're the annoyingst person next to cornipsus -.- I used the word caveman (and I think it's one of the less insulting words in my thesaurus) because I read 5 of his 5 postings and that's how he behaves. If he thinks that literature is unnecessary, so I have to tolerate his opinion, but why the hell does he has to post in this very same thread ABOUT literature?? If you, Rubrica, have any problems with me then, please, use the PM function and leave this thread alone with this OT. Rubrica
This argument will not continue, right? Do not worry, I had no intention of continuing it. Not even in PM. If Max Power doesn't like me, then that's fine, it's his choice. Now then, back to literature! What does everyone think of the his dark materials trilogy? Personally, I love it! Max Power
Why type things down when you can communicate in a way that takes less effort that humans are ment to use? THIS is truly ironic. Why aren't you talking to people on a marketplace in your hometown instead of trolling forums like this? It's an easier way to communicate and it takes less effort.../Edit: I just read that Boltbait discoverd Henry's true identity...--> Cornipsus...WTF I guess IP comparison? Bobofthedead
@ Rubrica: Personally, I love them too, they're great books, but what I don't love is the controversy surrounding them. I just do not see why the Church, after hundreds of years of preaching tolerance, can so openly rail against what, at the end of the day, is just a story, but they can overlook far worse incidents which the Church has power to influence. That doesn't just go for Christianity, but any religion, anywhere at any time - stop the hypocrisy surrounding works of fiction. If Phillip Pullman wants to Hidden Content: kill God in his books, let him - he isn't harming anyone. Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" harold
I'll have to read that Does he literally Hidden Content: kill god ? If so, that would imply Hidden Content: that god exists (which I highly doubt, given all the evidence to the contrary, and given the fact that all positive evidence is both questionable and far too old) Quote I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. Bobofthedead
Yes, Hidden Content: God exists in the books, but it is not known whether or not Hidden Content: He is the creator God or not Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" Max Power
Why is everybody spoilering everything? We live all (I hope so) in countries where freedom of speech is written down by law, and I can't find any passage in the forum rules against argueing about religion... (in that light way we do) I only read the golden compass in my native language and it didn't satisfied me that much that I would read it again nor read the rest of the trilogy. I didn't watched the movie either, IMHO the book is even more adressed to children than Harry Potter or other similiar literature. My all time favourite is the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy by Tolkien...maybe that's why I have a 11,7% geekness degree ;D Quote - My Gallery | My Deviant -
Bobofthedead
The tags are more to not ruin the ending or give away any major plot points than they are religious. Milkybarkid
I loved the Phillip Pullman Books, they were awesome, and even if they did go against Hidden Content: God being the creator of everything They were still amazing!
