Web page dimensions?

Recommended Posts

Right now I'm working on a web page, and I think I've learned enough about coding to start my images. But I'm not sure how big I should draw them in PDN. For instance how big should i draw the buttons? how big should the whole canvas be? Etc. any one know of a web page or something that gives you these?

Thanks

Kevin

I try to keep mine no wider than 780px, to accommodate an 800x600 monitor.

If at all possible create it using

tags that adjust to screen resolution. David posted an example in your other thread. As for the buttons, it really depends on how many pages you are wanting to link to. For instance, if you have four buttons I would say go for 200px each. But if you had 8 I would recommend 200px each. From their, you also have to know your height based on the layout you are wanting. So, in the end it truly depends on the design as well as the entirety of the project. If I think I am right about what you are trying to accomplish, post some more details over in the Lounge.

Well i think normal dimensions are 1280x746....

That is so rare that I doubt it even exists as native resolution on any screen. (you'd have to use custom resolutions.. not many people do that)

If not 800x600, then at least 1024x768. Lots of screens just look crappy at anything larger. Though laptops often have widescreens, laptops are by no means the standard.

I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. :(

Thank you!

Your posts say 800x600, but your screenshots say 1280x1024 :? I know you have an eye problem, but why put the screenshot on on 1280x1024?

I agree - 1024x768 is now the web standard. For people who 1) are in the know and 2) have the ocular capacity. Many people don't. So unless I'm doing a web page for geeks only (EDIT: And sometimes even then), I'll program it for 800x600 - it makes things fit nicely for people with smaller monitors, and it gives a nice buffer zone for people with larger monitors (makes things look more clean).

Many people don't.
Primary Display Resolution (1439533 Users)

800 x 600 24,323 1.69 %

1024 x 768 458,882 31.88 %

1152 x 864 74,797 5.20 %

1280 x 960 569,003 39.53 %

1440 x 900 105,925 7.36 %

1600 x 1200 24,432 1.70 %

1680 x 1050 129,643 9.01 %

1920 x 1200 32,576 2.26 %

Other 19,952 1.39 %

Do not limit yourself... Those 1.7% Really aren't gonna bother you. And there's no such thing as a 800x600 res monitor. Those would be CRT monitors, and they can be set to higher resolutions with quality loss.

Fine. This point still stands:

it gives a nice buffer zone for people with larger monitors (makes things look more clean).

And it is true.

I try to avoid the "omg ur screen iz so small" convo as much as possible, so I just amp up the resolution when I take screenshots.

So THAT'S how you can read the words in your sig. :-) They're nigh invisible on a moderately large screen.
