david.atwell
Especially since we only have 137874 posts on the whole forum. I'll be glad to be rid of post counts. usedHONDA
I wouldn't mind taking away post counts, either. Rick Brewster
We can't migrate usernames or post counts. Forumer won't let us have the database. So you should stop post-counting now. :-) If I were hosting the forum myself I could set whatever values in the database I wanted. I could re-establish everyone's post count if I wanted to, but since it would be tedous I wouldn't. Forumer won't relinquish the database because otherwise they'd have a difficult time making money if any forum that grew to a certain size decided to go independent. It's a completely logical reason. My main concern here is actually not resetting content, as users will migrate that as necessary. Resetting the user database has some logistical problems, like if pyrochild (not to pick on anyone ) went and registered for david.atwell's user name or something. But, that would sort itself out. The main thing I am worried about is just the time cost. I simply don't have the time to manage a forum myself. And I don't mean moderation of content and users, I mean like the software and hardware administration. Updates, backups, spam fighting, etc. So please, if someone has experience in this area, I'd appreciate your input (and yes HITMAN-X- I saw your post, I'm going to check that stuff out later). Things like migration of post counts or using a reputation system are way at the bottom of things that matter right now. That's like going to buy a car and debating for an hour whether you should get the $400 stereo upgrade when really what you should be first concerned about how you're going to afford $30,000. Mike Ryan
Rick: I have hosted forums before and it isnt as hard as it might sound. While you may not have any experience with Linux, using Ubuntu Server Edition is a lot easier than it looks. As well, with control over system files there are phpBB3 extensions that make moderating spam a lot easier.
Yata
Rick: If you were worrying about the backup/restore process, it's about 3 clicks and it's done. Very easy and painless. Honestly, I don't think it would be too hard. Once you get your footing and know where everything is, it is very easy and simple. BoltBait
I host a forum on http://www.BoltBait.com and I don't have to do the backups myself. The hosting company I use does nightly backups for me. (I can do them myself, if I want. But, why? The backups are located in a folder that I can get to from FTP.) They also handle all patches, etc. BTW, don't use the software I use. It is C#, though. But, Community Server is not that great. HITMAN-X-
Well Rick the name taking wont be that big of a problem but you will need to get a few people who know how to use the admin control panel. I not sure if phpBB has this build in yet but I know that when I was using phpBB I had to install a mod for adding members. Anyway hear me out. Step 1: Get a list of members who are active and want to be on the new forum. make sure to get there names and e-mail address. Step 2: When the new forum is installed lock it down so no one can access it but admins till all work is done. Step 3: Go to Add Member and fill in there name, e-mail, and then make a password for them. Step 4: E-Mail there login name and password to there e-mail address. You can see why you need more then one person as you will want to give each admin so many accounts to make and e-mail out to. Other then that you could keep a record of E-Mail address and user names. Let everyone sign up and if anyone like (bad oh pyrochild ) were to take someone else name and someone told you about it. All you have to do is go back to your record and check the E-Mail address for that name. If it don't macth up then delete that person account or change the user name so the real user can sign up. The thing I don't like about phpBB was adding mods and the major number of spam bots that would hit. Plus there limited help from phpBB for there product. It mostly is user on user help. That one thing I liked about IPB forum software, I contact customer support and in no time got an answer to my problem. Rick if you like to try a install of phpBB also I can upload the files for it and install the database and give you access to that as well. But I would have to do that tomorrow as I got work to do tonight . Sorry college comes 1st then messing around with this stuff. Rick I be more then happy to help with this and as you know I have done installs and admin phpBB and IPB, even nuke would not be a problem for me as it is based of phpBB. I spend most of my time learning stuff like this just for fun. Anyway Rick if you ever want to talk to me on this matter just shoot me a PM. Or if you used Ventrilo (Voice Program) before ask me for an IP and I will give you one that I go on the most. Quote DEXTUT.COM

livewrong811
So far, I've missed out on this thread, and have been spending most of my time in 'The Pictorium'. But now, I shall post! Huzzah! ...Anyways. Post count be hanged - I hate post counts. I'd rather turn 'em off and go to a Rep system. I think that the rep system can be good, but usually turns into a battle, and you'll see, at the end of many posts "rep would be appreciated!" or "please rep me if you liked this!" It can take the meaning out of some tutorials, artwork, etc. Not to beat you up over it, D.A, I know it was just an idea, but unless it was very refined, I would give a thumbs down to the rep system. Post count is a more honest, however rough, show of how active a user is.
pyrochild
How about no rep system AND no post count? Active posters will be known as the active posters because, well, they actively post. And there will be no incentive to post in stupid games just to boost the post count. And there will be no incentive to annoy the hell out of and/or suck up to mods and admins to boost your rep. All there will be is good, quality posting. (Or at least better than there is now...) But honestly, I'd much rather have Rick working on Pdn 4.0 than indulging in the huge time-sink that forum maintenance can be. if pyrochild (not to pick on anyone ) went and registered for david.atwell's user name or something... Well we are the same person Duh. Quote ambigram signature by Kemaru [i write plugins and stuff] If you like a post, upvote it!
