Transparent Pixels not retained in Copy and Paste

Recommended Posts

As the title says, copy and paste functions are not retaining the transparency of all pixels. All form of transparency is lost, and I do not remember this always happening. Right now the only way to retain any transparency is to save the picture onto my computer itself and open it into a new layer. Any information would be great!

3.22 or 3.30b?

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

Brain fart! I just thought of something. Are you copying transparent pixels, or are you copying from a Transparent layer? Alpha data is not preserved from the original layer, but it is from the pixels.

If that is the case, than thankyou for the information. But I do believe this happens with PNGs, if someone could post a transparent PNG or something I will be able to tell.
Hm, it's not like anyone around here has transparency in their sig or avatar...

*points at d.a*

And yeah, it seems to behave the same.

I am copying from a website. For instance, the Paint.NET logo at the top of the forum has a transparent background. When pasted into Paint.NET, it is filled white. All transparency is lost. Also, I am using PdN v3.22

This is because web browsers on Windows copy images to the clipboard as bitmaps, which do not support transparency. The applicaction that is being copied "from" must support the ability to copy other image types or they will always be bitmaps.

Total hack.

Hey, thanks! Good to know! I suppose it does make sense seeing how it works if I save it and then load it.
